The Painters

Les Andelys, a fascinating place for artists.

Arts_Autoportrait_Nicolas_PoussinThe town has always been an artistic melting pot.

In 1612, Quentin Varin, a painter from Beauvais, was commissioned for 3 paintings by one of the churches in Les Andelys. He was the first master of Nicolas Poussin, the leader of French Classicism, who was born in 1594 in Villers, a village near Les Andelys, and died in 1665 in Rome after an outstanding career, influenced by classical art.

The great era of Impressionnism.

In the 19th century, William Turner (1775-1851) stayed in Les Andelys several times. He painted watercolours of the Château-Gaillard. At the beginning of the 20th century, the spontaneity of his painting influenced a whole generation of artists from the impressionist movement and who belong to the Norman School: René Sautin (1881-1968), Georges Manzana-Pissarro (1871-1981), Ludovic Rodo Pissarro (1878-1952), Eugène Clary (1856-1929), Georges Le Meilleur (1861-1945), Adolphe Albert (1853-1938), Marthe Lucas (1877-1960). Paul Signac (1863-1935) who is attracted by this lovely town painted several pointillist works showing the banks of the River Seine while he stayed in Le Petit Andely.
