Saint Saviour’s church in Les Andelys

Classified as a Historical Monument since 1840

The origin of Saint Saviour’s church is linked to Château-Gaillard.

Saint Saviour’s church is a small picturesque gothic church in the shape of a Greek cross

It houses a world famous organ from the 17th century

A gothic jewel nestled in the heart of Petit Andely

Saint Saviour's church in Les AndelysIn 1196-1198, Richard the Lion-Heart, King of England and Duke of Normandy erects the Château-Gaillard. To accommodate the workers, he builds and fortifies le Petit Andely.

Shortly after the conquest of the fortress in 1204, the King of France, Philip Augustus, starts the edification of Saint Saviour’s church with the chancel, between 1220 and 1240. The polygonal chevet has six flying buttresses framing the upper windows. The transept and the nave are achieved a hundred years later.

The streamlined, elegant spire of wood and slate is 47 metres high.

Inside, the chancel still has traces of a polychromatic decoration from the 15th century. At the same period a wooden porch, supported by a stone base, is added on to the western façade. It protects a polychromatic statue of the 13th century figure of Christ Blessing.
